Hello my name is Melvin Martinez, and I want to share my story so that there may be justice. I was sentenced to life in prison for a death that another man committed and also confessed to. I was questioned by Chelsea police voluntarily because I had nothing to hide. I gave my explanation and wanted to go home. But the police took me to a room where they forced me to confess to a crime that I did not commit, violating my human rights and my lack of education. They tortured me physically and mentally to make me guilty.
There was no camera in that room—that is why I cannot prove everything they did to me. There was no lawyer present at my interrogation, nor were my parents present even though they knew that I was a kid or minor. They took advantage of the fact I don’t speak English and have no education, and they destroyed my life and my future.
Today, an Innocence Project program is helping me with my case because there is no evidence against me, only that tape recording of what they made me confess under torture. But the Innocence Project made me see the lights at the end of the tunnel.
