Michael is 36 and incarcerated in the US (NY).
With prison reform on the horizon, I intend to be home in the next three to four years. I’ve never signed up for a penpal service, but Wire of Hope piqued my interest and I decided to give it a try. My intention is to form relationships to the society I’ll soon be part of again. Here’s a recap of my decade plus incarceration:
Haven’t received a disciplinary ticket.
Satisfied my vocational requirement in Mechanical Drafting.
Help teach rehabilitation classes alongside counselors. My position is called IDA: Inmate Program Assistant.
Work at Saint Dismas Church since 2016 to Present. It’s a very unique job, to maintain an 8,000 square foot Gothic Church built by inmates between 1938 to 1941.
I’ve taught myself Italian.
Read numerous books spanning many genres: Philosophy. Astronomy. Genetics. World History. Self-educating, to me, is the pinnacle of rehabilitation. I’ve also written and published a historical fiction novel. Explain more if you reach out!
Regardless of my accolades and self-improvement, I remain convicted of a crime. There’s no excuse. No amount of right doing that can ‘right’ my wrongs. All I can do is move forward and never forget the reason why I am here.
