Robert is 39 and incarcerated in the US (CO).

Can you imagine going twenty years without touching or smelling grass? Or going twenty years without seeing or rubbing a dog? I was just given the privilege to walk on grass and rub a dog for the first time since 2005. I recently relocated out of isolation, which was in a facility I spent half my life in. When I first walked on the grass, it was a surreal experience. Feeling earth that embraced me instead of aggressively pushing back on me like the hard concrete did damn near brought tears to my eyes. When I rubbed one of the dogs in the dog program, I did cry. He smelled like a wet basement, but it was the best smell that I’ve smelled in a long time.
I was released from Death Row in 2020. When I was on DR, I published five children’s books that are on Amazon. Soon after, my wife and I received a miracle in the form of our daughter. Writing books was my way of creating even more reasons to keep going despite the expiration date looming above my head. My book writing has given me a sense of empowerment and afforded me the opportunity to feel like a man, even when I only manage to sell one book in a month. It’s incredibly difficult, though, to live with your hand outstretched, asking for help. It’s a humbling experience, but it’s also one of the hardest things I’ve had to confront since my incarceration.
Living on Death Row was equivalent to a fish sinking into deep, dark water. Many find the pressure debilitating, while others create their own light in the darkness. I find it somewhat ironic that I was able to learn to live life in a place where I was sent to die.
