Hi, I’m Mario. I’m 35 and an aspiring author and entrepreneur.
I started my prison sentence in true convict fashion, fighting, hustling, and gangbanging. My first 10 years in prison were spent between two of Colorado’s most notorious maximum custody facilities.
During my time behind bars, I have met some unique individuals. From the infamous serial killers and men on death row to the famous like Melvin Guillard, the legendary UFC fighter, who almost kicked my teeth in.
In 2021, I almost died, but instead, something greater happened, and less than a month from my return to prison from the hospital, my appeals went through. My 28-year sentence was reduced by the Judge to 18, making me eligible for parole in 2026.
Suddenly, my life was changed. My eyes opened and the world came rushing in.
Years ago, an O.G. who looked like Katt Williams told me “You can’t let a location define who you are as a man.” So today, while I’m still in prison, I feel a sense of freedom. Because this morning, I did CrossFit, and tomorrow I will go to my prison job in education and help young thugs get their GEDs and next month I head back to college, all while behind these walls.
So, why did I sign up for a pen pal site? – You can ask me. And I think everyone’s got a great life story to tell and I would like to hear yours.
What about after prison you ask… First, I’m dyeing my dreadlocks fire red! Second, I’m buying a badass Trident Triumph motorcycle and publishing my first book.
Third, I plan to start my own CrossFit style gym, employing life lessons learned in prison. Lessons that lead to the warrior mentality and allow both men and women to overcome obstacles and setbacks in life.
