My name is Clay and I am 32 years old. I work as a peer literacy mentor at San Quentin State Prison.

I have learned that life is too short to wait for friends to come into my life. I am a firm believer that if you put yourself out there, the right people will find you. Everyone I used to know is still doing the same things, and since I have changed my life, I have no interest in going backwards. “They are in your past for a reason”, I’ve heard it said. Though this may be true, it does not make it any less lonely to journey through life without friends to call you on your BS.

The world only sees me for the worst things I’ve ever done. Most people don’t even know I exist, and those of you that do, all you know is my crime, but I am so much more than the sum of my worst mistakes. I’ll tell you what, don’t judge me and I won’t judge you, and let’s see where that takes us.
