Richard is 48 years old and incarcerated in the US (VA).
Dear Friend,
I am not the same young man that entered prison 28 years ago. I have matured into a 48 years old man who has spent the last two decades in prison accepting responsibility for my actions, learning from my past mistakes, and doing what I can to show others that I deserve a second chance at life.
I feel comfortable asking “you” to invest in me because I have used my incarceration to invest in myself. I realize that actions have consequences and how valuable opportunities are to succeeding. I have worked tirelessly to further my education. I completed adult education levels one through five, obtained my GED, received vocational training in several areas, obtained an Associate’s degree in counseling and I’ve completed all available prison programs.
Unfortunately, it took the cold reality of prison for me to experience true brokenness, but my broken pieces taught me the value of one soul. I am especially interested in connecting with the disadvantaged and disenfranchised of today, as true beauty resides in the heart of the broken.
My friends call me “Teardrop” because after I committed to change and helping other, I began water seeds in other prisoners, for the best way to break the chain of sowing and reaping darkness is to begin sowing seeds of righteousness immediately. I have answered so many questions about my own life from witnessing others, and I’ve seen patient, long suffering love changes even the most hardened hearts.
My first love is writing poetry. After publishing several poems, I realized that my poetry gives me a powerful voice in which I can use to touch people in places I can’t physically reach. I hope that my poetry expresses to people that difficult times come to everyone, yet it is our response to trials that define who we are.
I also enjoy reading – my favorite subject is world history. I love music – mostly blues and reggae. I play lots of chess, I love cooking, yoga, boxing. In the free world I enjoyed fishing, swimming, hiking, gardening, hunting, and long-distance riding. I haven’t traveled much, but I would like to. My favorite TV shows are Alone, Mountain Men, Big Brother, Animal Kingdom, and the Walking Dead.
I spent part of my childhood living on a farm, therefore, I love all animals, especially dogs. I am in the process now of learning how to train dogs and run a successful dog training and pet-sitting company.
I could be free via parole as soon as the first quarter of 2022. However, the State of Virginia just passed “retroactive” Bill H.5148 that becomes effective on July 1, 2022. Any prisoners who have served as much time as I have will be released.
I am in search of a friend, someone who knows that healthy relationships are made of matching values, strong character, emotional maturity, loyalty, and commitment.
I long for good friends who believe they can be a light of hope in someone’s life who comes from a dark past. I want friends I can learn from and who will encourage me in my purpose of being successful as I prepare to reenter society.
I’ve done significant introspection, and I am no longer weighed down by unnecessary expectations. My strength comes from knowing we are all connected by our need to be loved, our need to be forgiven, and although we can’t always remove each other’s heavy burdens, we can share each other’s experiences by simply listening to each other, and learning what makes each other beautiful on the inside.
If you feel alone, forgotten, or underappreciated, or if you just want someone to talk to, I would like to be a true friend to you, and share with you some of the wisdom, peace and laughter life has given me.
If you are willing to search for love or friendship in an unusual place made of time and steel, I promise to accept you as you are.
Sincerely yours,
Richard Goode
