Stop, please, if you may pull your attention from my sharply handsome, chiseled features, my luscious lips, my piercingly intelligent and captivating eyes. LOL. No seriously. Ignore my debonair looks, and my sculpted physique. Ignore my sentence length; it is an injustice. Ignore my charges they are the product of malice. They are fake news. None of that defines me.
Here’s my definition. I am a voracious reader. A prolific writer. An introspective thinker. An avid and thoughtful listener. An empathetic and masterful conversationalist. I often care so much it hurts. I laugh so much I cry. I do not shy away from the complexity of human emotion; rather I embrace it. I have traveled to eight different countries, and lived in three. I am well educated, because I choose enlightenment over ignorance. I am a Muslim, and devout because my life experiences have proven to me the truth of my religion. I have witnessed, and I bear witness daily to the ugliness and depravity of the world. Yet, I focus on the beauty and the propensity for good contained within the human spirit. Here’s the truth. Incarceration has stripped me of mankind’s most precious gift. Friendship. That unique bond that ties together the human experience. Happiness, sadness, laughter, and tears. Empathy, sympathy, understanding and communication. Support, advice, honesty and trust. These are the building blocks of a lasting friendship. Making a friend. Finding someone you can connect with is a leap of faith. So go ahead and jump. I promise I’ll catch you.
